New York spot gold closed down $4.40 to $1,127.70 on Tuesday. The TSX Venture Exchange lost 2.99 points to 523.63 while the TSX Gold Index gained 0.25 point to 121.57. Gainers matched decliners among Canadian gold miners today. Eldorado Gold Corp. gained 14 cents to $4.04 on 4.93 million shares and Kinross Gold Corp. (K) added 11 cents to $2.26 on 5.22 million shares. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) fell five cents to $8.34 on 3.97 million shares.
Randall Oliphant and Robert Gallagher's New Gold Inc. (NGD) gained six cents to $2.98 on 4.10 million shares. Investors have shrugged off news that the company's president and chief executive officer, Mr. Gallagher, will retire at the end of June, presumably because its executive chairman, Mr. Oliphant, will be "continuing to lead New Gold." That suggests a better title for Mr. Gallagher would have been "subordinate executive officer," something borne out by the company's pay structure. Mr. Oliphant received nearly $680,000 in salary last year while Mr. Gallagher came in at just under $590,000. Mr. Oliphant also had a better year; he earned a cash bonus of $724,000 while Mr. Gallagher's fell just short of $500,000.
