New York spot gold closed down $1.20 to $1,152.70 Thursday, as the U.S. dollar finally had a down day after a weaker-than-expected retail sales report. The TSX Venture Exchange rose 4.14 points to 673.77, while the TSX Gold Index lost 2.46 points to 156.52.
Gold miners in Canada ended some up slightly, others down. Iamgold Corp. (IMG) added four cents to $2.52, Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) rose 10 cents to $7.35, Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) lost six cents to $5.99 and Goldcorp Inc. (G) lost 24 cents to $23.63.
Centerra Gold Inc. (CG) gained six cent to $5.43 on 2.01 million shares. The company's president, Ian Atkinson, is planning to retire at the end of the year. He spent 10 years with the Kyrgyzstani gold miner, the first seven as vice-president of exploration and the last three as president. He has faced strike-prone unions, litigious environmentalists and greedy government officials, all the while somehow managing to keep the company's gold mine, as the government constantly threatened to expropriate it. For his services in 2013 at the active gold miner, Mr. Atkinson received $637,500 in salary and $1.18-million in cash bonuses.
