New York spot gold closed down $5 to $1,233.70 Tuesday as the U.S. dollar rose. China said its inflation dropped to a five-year low in January, and Greece plans to meet with the European Union again Wednesday. Here in Canada, the TSX Venture Exchange dropped 5.15 points to 691.04 and the TSX Gold Index lost 2.55 points to 182.11.

Canadian gold miners had a down day. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) fell 26 cents to $15.30, Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) fell 49 cents to $11.61, Goldcorp Inc. (G) lost 10 cents to $29.12 and Kinross Gold Corp. (K) lost four cents to $4.07, after releasing its 2014 financials. The company narrowed its loss to $1.4-billion last year, down from $3-billion in 2013 and $2.5-billion in 2012. It attributed all three losses to huge writedowns, much of which came from the company's Tasiast gold mine in Mauritania.

John McConnell's Victoria Gold Corp. (VIT) slipped 2.5 cents to 19 cents on 1.37 million shares. The stock has been trading heavily all month, climbing from 10 cents last year. This week President McConnell is on a marketing campaign. He stopped in San Francisco today, will head to Los Angeles tomorrow, Newport Beach on Thursday and Dallas on Friday. Then, he will travel to Florida for a week of promotion, before heading to Toronto for the PDAC conference at the end of the month. Victoria has $13-million in working capital, but it needs $382-million to build a mine at its eight-million-ounce Eagle gold deposit in the Yukon. The company received its mining licence in 2013, but has had difficulty raising money. Unlike most northern gold projects, Eagle is accessible all year by road and airstrip, but Yukon winters are snowy and cold. In 2011 and 2012 Mr. McConnell managed to raise $51-million by selling four of the company's exploration properties. He has three remaining, but no interested buyers. He had been hoping he would not have to dilute the stock, as Victoria already has 340 million shares outstanding.
