New York spot gold climbed $37.20 to $1,178.50 Friday, ending the week up $5.60. The United States economy added 214,000 jobs last month, slightly below the 230,000 increase analysts had been projecting. The TSX Venture Exchange gained 18.72 points to 770.26 and the TSX Gold Index rose 9.89 points to 144.86.

Gold miners ended the day higher. Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) added 38 cents to $6.38, Goldcorp Inc. (G) rose $1.47 to $22.68, Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) rose $1.81 to $8.27 and Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) gained 44 cents to $4.47.

British Columbia's Minister of Energy and Mines, Bill Bennett, was in Alaska this week trying to assure Alaskans that British Columbia has strict environmental regulations when it comes to mining. He was also trying to clear up some of the misconceptions surrounding Imperial Metals Corp.'s (III: $8.92) Mt. Polley tailings spill, where to this day water remains potable. To help bolster his case Mr. Bennett brought with him Chad Day, president of the Tahltan First Nation's Tahltan Central Council. The Tahltan were once strongly opposed to Imperial Metals building a gold mine at its Red Chris project in Northern B.C. They fought against the mine for eight years, suing over the company's environmental permit and taking the lawsuit all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada. (It ruled that the mine had been approved prematurely, but allowed Imperial to continue with development.) When the company made some changes, including hiring band members for construction last year, the Tahltan changed its mind. Now, it supports the mine, which will begin production shortly. Recently the band has been helping Imperial repair its reputation following the negative Mt. Polley attention. There is one small group of Tahltan elders, the Klabona Keepers, still opposed to the Red Chris mine, but the Tahltan Council does not endorse their nuisance activities.
