New York spot gold rose $13.20 to $1,221.50 Wednesday. Bullion started the day down but climbed after the Federal Reserve released minutes from its last meeting. The minutes contained much talk of weakening world economies. The TSX Venture Exchange fell 6.16 points to 848.67, while the TSX Gold Index rose 11.18 points to 170.23. The TMX Group today said companies listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX-V raised $40-billion in equity capital during the first eight months of the year, up from $28-billion for the same period in 2013. The mining sector was responsible for $6.6-billion, up from $2.7-billion last year, and companies listed on the TSX-V raised $3.8-billion, but the TMX did not provide a comparative figure for 2013. Last year, however, its equity financing statistics report for the end of August showed TSX-V listed companied had raised $2.3-billion.
Major Canadian gold miners ended the day up. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) gained $2.81 to $34.05, Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) climbed $1.12 to $9.76, Detour Gold Corp. (DGC) climbed 88 cents to $8.98 and Yamana Gold Inc. (YRI) rose 39 cents to $6.67.
