New York spot gold closed up 60 cents to $1,308.50 Tuesday, holding steady. Societe Generale forecasts a smaller-than-usual increase in the price of bullion this fall, citing strict import restrictions in India and a large gold inventory in China. Here in Canada, the TSX Venture Exchange slipped a fraction of a point to 998.71, and the TSX Gold Index rose 3.71 points to 207.69.
Canadian gold miners ended the day mostly up. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) gained 49 cents to $20.94, Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) gained 41 cents to $9.27 and Alamos Gold Inc. (AGI) rose 27 cents to $10.88, while Imperial Metals Ltd. (III) lost 50 cents to $10.02. British Columbia's ministry of environment has recorded its first dead fish following last week's Mount Polley tailings spill. This fish, a rainbow trout, was brought to officals' attention by a Likely resident. The ministry is conducting an autopsy.
