New York spot gold closed down $14 to $1,280.50 Thursday, as the U.S. dollar continued to climb ahead of Friday's jobs report. In Canada, the TSX Venture Exchange lost 9.58 points to 1,001.52 and the TSX Gold Index lost 4.50 points to 195.94.

Canada's larger gold miners ended the day down. Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. (AEM) dropped $3.88 to $40.54, Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) dropped 44 cents to $19.70, Goldcorp Inc. (G) lost 38 cents to $29.86 and Iamgold Corp. (IMG) slipped eight cents to $4.03.

Rudy Fronk's Seabridge Gold Inc. (SEA) gained 37 cents to $10.21 on 222,000 shares. The company has received provincial environmental approval for its KSM gold project in British Columbia. Next, there will be a 30-day public comment period, after which Canada's federal environment minister, Leona Aglukkaq, will make her decision. Seabridge needs approval from both levels of government in order to attract a KSM joint venturer. A mine at KSM would cost $5.3-billion to build, but the company does not plan to do that itself. Seabridge has always been looking for a buyer or joint venturer. This week, Mr. Fronk told the Vancouver Sun that there are only 10 companies in the world that could build and operate a mine of this size. So far, none of them has knocked on Seabridge's door.
