The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Wednesday was a weak 60-83-145. The TSX Venture Exchange fell nine points to 714 while polished diamond prices were flat. Gary Economo's faltering Focus Graphite Inc. (FMS) closed unchanged at 2.5 cents on 3.33 million shares. The company completed a preliminary economic assessment of its Kwyjibo rare earth project in northeastern Quebec in June but has been silent since then.
Dermot Desmond's Mountain Province Diamonds Inc. (MPVD) closed down two cents to $2.67 on 462,000 shares. The company and its 51-per-cent co-venturer, De Beers Canada, have drilled into additional kimberlite at their Gahcho Kue mine, 250 kilometres northeast of Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. These most recent hits occurred in the corridor between the 5034 pipe, which they are currently mining, and the Tuzo pipe, a few kilometres to the north.
Much of the drilling centres in the area around the small North pipe, roughly 100 metres north of the main 5034 pipe. The North pipe is small, circular and had apparently been modelled to exist only at depth, therefore it was not part of the initial mine plan. (There is also a South pipe at 5034. It is a bit larger and lies nearer the surface, putting it within the shell of the 5034 open-pit mine.)
