The diamonds and specialty minerals box score for Tuesday was a weak 68-91-121. The TSX Venture Exchange rose fractionally to 740 while polished diamond prices inched higher. Dr. Leon Daniels's Pangolin Diamonds Corp. (PAN) closed unchanged at 5.5 cents on 1.01 million shares. This was the second-highest volume since November, when over 1.5 million shares traded. There has been no news since May, when the company recovered two diamonds from soil sampling at Malatswae in Botswana.
Matt Manson's Stornoway Diamond Corp. (SWY) dropped two cents to 42 cents on 290,000 shares. The company revealed on Monday that it had temporarily suspended mining operations at its Renard mine in Quebec because of a nearby forest fire. The fire was no immediate danger to the mine as it was 12.5 kilometres to the south, but it was being pushed northward by brisk southerly winds. (The company reported the winds as northerly, but meteorologists report the wind direction as where it is coming from, not headed toward.) Of more immediate concern, the fire was less than four kilometres south of the Clarence and Abel Swallow airport, which services Renard. Moreover, the fire, which covers an area 18 kilometres long and six kilometres wide, had crept to within 100 metres of the access road leading to Renard. Fortunately, the winds are expected to shift and some showers are forecast over the next day or two.
