The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Tuesday was a positive 67-59-133. The TSX Venture Exchange jumped 10.98 points to 649.32 while polished diamond prices were flat. Terry Tucker's Tango Mining Ltd. (TGV) lost one-half cent to two cents on 982,000 shares. The company is trying to acquire the mothballed BK-11 diamond mine in Botswana from Firestone Diamonds Ltd. at a cost of $8-million (U.S.). Orbite Technologies Inc. (ORT) closed unchanged at 24.5 cents on 651,000 shares. The company is still trying to get its high-purity alumina plant on Gaspe peninsula into production.

Robert Gannicott's Dominion Diamond Corp. (DDC), up 34 cents to $14.20 on 442,000 shares, had a sparkling first quarter at its Diavik mine in the Northwest Territories. The mine produced 1.85 million carats from mining 738,000 tonnes of kimberlite, an average of 3.32 carats per tonne. That was up from 1.44 million carats from 574,000 tonnes, an average of 3.02 carats per tonne, mined in the same quarter a year ago. The 26-per-cent increase in carats is the result of a higher processing rate and an improved grade. The company now expects to recover 7.0 million carats this year from 2.1 million tonnes of kimberlite, all of it mined from underground. That guidance is unchanged from estimates prepared early this year, but it is an improvement over the 6.4 million carats the mine produced last year.
