The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Wednesday was a depressing 31-51-156. The TSX Venture Exchange gained one point to 520 while polished diamond prices inched higher. Matt Manson's Stornoway Diamond Corp. (SWY) gained one cent to 76 cents on 161,000 shares. Stornoway, one of two Canadian diamond companies building a big mine, has had a good year. Marcy Kiesman's Durango Resources Inc. (DGO) gained three cents to six cents on 3.85 million shares. Durango is mulling a possible acquisition of additional lithium claims near the Whabouchi deposit in Quebec.

Lukas Lundin's Lucara Diamond Corp. (LUC), up three cents to $1.61 on 222,000 shares, stunned investors after the market's close today with word that its Karowe mine has just produced a 1,111-carat diamond. The company's president and chief executive officer, Dr. William Lamb, described what is the world's second-largest gem-quality diamond" to be recovered as a "magnificent stone" recovered from the prolific southern lobe of Karowe. (The deposit, known by the humdrum AK-6 moniker when Lucara acquired it in 2009, was renamed Karowe in 2011. The name, which means "precious stone" in a local Kalahari Bushman dialect, seems especially appropriate today.)
