The diamond and specialty minerals stocks box score for Wednesday was a lethargic 34-43-160. The TSX Venture Exchange fell three points to 528 while polished diamond prices were flat. Robert Gannicott and Brendan Bell's Dominion Diamond Corp. (DDC), which dipped to another two-year intraday low of $11.96, closed down 27 cents to $12.13 on 392,000 shares. There has been no news, but investors who remember the debacle of the late 2000s, when the company's stock slumped to $2.19, are probably spooked by the latest slump in rough diamond prices. Fortunately, the current slump is nothing like what happened seven years ago. Glenn Kelly's Orbite Technologies Inc. (ORT) gained 2.5 cents to 49 cents on 4.21 million shares after it got a patent for extracting rare metals from fly ash.
Dr. Thomas Morris's Northern Superior Resources Inc. (SUP: $0.03) has advanced its Ville Marie diamond prospect in the Temiscamingue region of Quebec "to a stage where its opportunity and potential mineral value has been demonstrated," thanks to the drill-ready targets identified on the property. Dr. Morris, chief executive officer, says that his company is seeking option or joint venture partners for the project. It seems a difficult search, as in spring he said the project was generating interest from potential partners. Left to its own devices, Northern Superior has accomplished nearly nothing on Ville Marie over the past several years, despite the eight targets deemed ready for drilling. Dr. Morris said he had a budget laid out for testing them, but it is much like the budget he first proposed in the late 2000s.
