It has been 2-1/2 years since the Law Society of British Columbia disbarred Vancouver securities lawyer John Briner, but the litigation arising from his law practice is still under way. The Law Society's insurance arm has filed an application in the Supreme Court of British Columbia seeking a $98,971 summary judgment against Mr. Briner. The application states that Mr. Briner was supposed to be holding the money in trust, but spent it without authorization.

The allegations are contained in an application filed on April 27, 2018, at the Vancouver courthouse. The entity behind the application is the LSBC Captive Insurance Company, which provides compulsory liability insurance to members of the Law Society of British Columbia. Among other things, the insurance covers any money that clients lose while it is in a lawyer's trust account.
