Alternative trading systems in Canada received 34.6 per cent of volume for the week ended March 21, 2014. Chi-X Canada held onto its lead, trading an average of 104 million shares a day for 12 per cent of volume. Alpha Trading Systems came second with 89 million shares a day or 10 per cent of volume, and CX2 came third with 34 million shares a day or 3.8 per cent. Match Now, TMX Select, Pure Trading and Omega ATS shared the remainder. The Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange received 62.8 per cent, while the Canadian Securities Exchange handled a record 2.5 per cent, thanks to the 22.5 million shares it traded each day.

The CSE attributes its recent jump in volume to medical marijuana. There are four weed deals listed on the CSE with Abattis Bioceuticals Corp. (ATT) the most active by far. It soared $1.13 to $2.46 last week on 13 million shares. Next Gen Metals Inc. (N) gained 36 cents to 57 cents on 5.6 million shares and Enertopia Corp. (TOP) gained 36 cents to 91 cents on 3.6 million shares. Southbridge Resources Corp. (SOU: $0.05) apparently did not get the message, and failed to trade.
