The Vancouver Sun reports in its Tuesday edition Gregor Robertson wants Vancouver to become a high-tech oasis; by 2020, the greenest and cleanest, most "sustainable" patch of urbanity in the world. The Sun's Barbara Yaffe writes unfortunately, here in the real world, life is harsher and the province where Vancouver thrives happens to be highly reliant on the often-dirty resource and energy industries. Mr. Robertson on CBC radio made plain his dislike of projects like Enbridge's Northern Gateway oil pipeline. He agrees with the province's May 31 formal rejection of the proposal. He also opposes expanding the Kinder Morgan pipeline to Burnaby, which would dramatically increase oil tanker traffic in and out of Vancouver Harbour. Also on the hit list is expansion of Vancouver-area coal ports. The mayor wants high-tech. Sounds great. Big incomes -- $1,200 a week on average compared to $800 for the average B.C. worker. Trouble is, this vision is aspirational. It will not support a city. Mr. Robertson and NDP leader Adrian Dix like talking up the movie industry and software development as job creators. Those two categories employ fewer than 15,000 people. By contrast, 37,000 British Columbians are employed in mining.
