The Globe and Mail reports in its Tuesday, June 4, edition that Canadian Pacific Railway ($135.50) has almost doubled in value in the past year alone. The Globe's Richard Blackwell and Guy Dixon write that Capital Markets analyst Walter Spracklin is not surprised at Pershing Square Capital Management's intention to trim its holding in CP. He does not expect the share sale to change the way CP operates, its earnings profile, or its ability to grow. Mr. Sprackline says, "This is just an investor selling to another investor." He says, however, "whenever you have the single biggest shareholder selling out ... it might impact how other people are looking at the stock," particularly if they have a similar investing approach. "But from a fundamental perspective, nothing is changing about this company," says Mr. Spracklin. At the CP annual meeting held in Toronto a few weeks ago, Pershing Square Capital Management head Bill Ackman exuded confidence, saying: "Our job was to getting Hunter [Harrison] in place. It's a great outcome for everyone. I couldn't be more happy." He noted at the time that CP's strong share price was the biggest indication of the company's recent successes.
