Canada's alternative trading systems, including Alpha Exchange, handled 32.6 per cent of trading volume during the week ended May 4, 2012. Alpha Exchange remained in first place, trading an average of 144.9 million shares a day for 16.3 per cent of volume. Chi-X Canada came second, trading an average of 59.2 million shares a day for 8.4 per cent of volume. In third place, Pure Trading handled 19.8 million shares a day for 2.8 per cent, followed by dark pool Match Now with 18.3 million shares a day for 2.6 per cent. TMX Select came fifth with 9.4 million shares a day or 1.3 per cent, and finally there was Omega ATS with 8.2 million shares a day or 1.1 per cent. Together, the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange handled the remaining 67.4 per cent.
Looking at stocks listed only on the TSX, the exchange received 60.4 per cent of volume. Alpha handled 20.4 per cent, Chi-X had 9.4 per cent and together the other ATSs had 9.8 per cent.
