New York spot gold continued its fall dropping $25.70 to $1,360.20 Friday, ending the week down $88, while the U.S. dollar continued its climb, hitting three-year highs against many major currencies. Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke will discuss the American economy in two public appearances next week. Here in Canada, the TSX Venture Exchange added 1.82 points to 934.68 and the TSX Gold Index lost 6.14 points to 180.2.
Canada's largest gold miners had another down day. Barrick Gold Corp. (ABX) dropped 54 cents to $19.07, Kinross Gold Corp. (K) lost 13 cents to $5.40, Iamgold Corp. (IMG) lost 24 cents to $4.81 and Eldorado Gold Corp. (ELD) fell 22 cents ton $6.91.
Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. (FCX) gained 64 cents to $32.68 on 15.63 million shares. Rescuers are still searching for 23 of the 39 mine workers trapped during a tunnel collapse at the Grasberg mine in Indonesia this week. The union has demanded the mine stay shut until an investigation finds the cause of the collapse; meanwhile, hundreds of the mine's 20,000 workers have started a blockade. They refuse to go back to work until the company can ensure their safety. Freeport has made no changes to its 2013 production target, yet.
