Alpha Trading Systems regained its lead among alternative trading systems during the week ended May 17, 2013. Alpha captured an average of 73.2 million shares a day or 11.3 per cent of volume. Chi-X Canada followed with 69.5 million shares a day or 10.8 per cent. Dark pool Match Now stepped into third with 13.1 million shares a day or 2 per cent of volume, slightly beating out TMX Select, which handled 13 million shares, also 2 per cent. Pure Trading came fifth with 10 million shares or 1.5 per cent, and Omega ATS followed with 8.5 million shares a day or 1.3 per cent. New ATS, CX2, handled 377,000 shares or 0.05 per cent of volume. Together, all six ATSs captured 29.2 per cent of Canadian trading volume, while the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange held onto the other 70.8 per cent.
Looking only at volume on the TSX, the exchange captured 65.7 per cent of trading. Chi-X upheld its lead, capturing 12.9 per cent of volume. Alpha handled 12.4 per cent. Together, the other ATSs handled the rest, 9 per cent.
