Alternative trading systems in Canada handled 33.7 per cent of trading volume during the week ended May 3, 2013. For the first time in four years, Alpha Trading Systems was not the most active ATS in Canada; that spot went to Chi-X Canada, which handled an average of 101 million shares a day for 15.2 per cent of trading volume. Alpha came second with a lower-than-usual 66 million shares a day or 9.9 per cent of volume. Pure Trading came third with 23 million shares a day or 3.4 per cent of volume. TMX Select followed with 12.4 million shares a day or 1.8 per cent. Dark pool Match Now handled 11.6 million shares a day or 1.7 per cent, and Omega ATS handled 8.9 million shares a day or 1.3 per cent. The Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange handled the other 66.3 per cent.
Looking at securities listed only on the TSX, the exchange captured 61.2 per cent of volume. Chi-X handled 18.3 per cent, Alpha had 11.7 per cent and together the other ATSs handled the rest, 8.8 per cent.
