Alternative trading systems in Canada handled 32.2 per cent of trading volume during the week ended April 26, 2013. Alpha Trading Systems barely held onto its lead, trading an average of 87 million shares a day, or 12.75 per cent of volume. Chi-X Canada followed close behind with 82 million shares a day or 12 per cent of volume. TMX Select came third with 16.4 million shares a day or 2.4 per cent; dark pool Match Now handled 12.9 million shares a day or 1.9 per cent; Pure Trading handled 12.2 million shares a day or 1.7 per cent, and Omega ATS traded 9.3 million shares a day or 1.36 per cent. Together, the Toronto Stock Exchange, the TSX Venture Exchange and the Canadian National Stock Exchange captured 67.8 per cent of volume.
Looking only at stocks listed on the TSX, the exchange handled 62.5 per cent of trading volume. Chi-X, for the first time, overtook Alpha capturing 14.2 per cent of trading volume, while Alpha handled 14 per cent. The other ATSs had the remaining 9.3 per cent.
