Pure in third, Alpha to become an exchange April 1

Pure Trading was the third most active alternative trading system in Canada during the week ended Jan. 20, 2012. Alpha Trading Systems, as usual, led the group, trading 166.8 million shares a day or 16.6 per cent of volume. Chi-X Canada came second, trading 63.9 million shares a day or 6.6 per cent of volume. Then there was Pure with 42.4 million shares of 4.4 per cent. Omega ATS handled 34.3 million shares or 3.5 per cent, followed by dark pool Match Now in fifth place with 22.4 million shares or 2.3 per cent, and finally TMX Select with nine million shares or 0.9 per cent. Together the ATSs handled 34.7 per cent of trading volume, leaving the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange with 65.3 per cent.

Looking at the securities listed only on the TSX, Alpha handled 21.3 per cent, Chi-X handled 8.5 per cent and the other ATSs together had 7.3 per cent. The exchange was left with 62.9 per cent.

Dark pool Match Now has brought its volume reports up to date. It has been operating since July, 2007, but only reporting its volumes now and then. According to the Investment Regulatory Organization of Canada, Match Now handled about 2 per cent of Canadian trading in 2011 (about the same as Omega), up from 1 per cent in 2010.
