2014-07-21 14:05 ET - News Release

Leading Indonesian Healthcare Operator Gains Intelligence to Monitor Business Performance And Strategize Growth Plans

ARMONK, N.Y. and JAKARTA, Indonesia, July 21, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- IBM (NYSE: IBM) announced today that Bundamedik Healthcare System, the leading healthcare operator in Indonesia, is using its Big Data and Analytics technology to transform the administration and financial management systems of the first hospital in its network -- RSIA Bunda Jakarta. By integrating these data systems, the hospital can now use analytics to assist in decision making for critical financial business processes, such as budgeting, reporting, scorecarding, analysis and forecasting.

As a result, Bundamedik is now able to gain a holistic and more accurate view on the overall spending and budget status at RSIA Bunda Jakarta. This is helping to support growth plans by ensuring the resources of the hospital are aligned with corporate objectives.

With a growing population of 234 million, Indonesia is witnessing a rapid expansion of the middle class and is poised to become a key market of growth for the healthcare industry. Also, the rollout of the universal health coverage in January has brought an increasing demand for higher quality healthcare services, pushing medical care providers to increase their operational efficiency and patient services.

As one of the leading healthcare providers in Indonesia, Bundamedik provides innovative and professional medical care to patients through the use of technology and innovative solutions. In its bid to gain share in the local healthcare market, which Frost & Sullivan predicted will be worth US$60.6 billion in 2018 1, Bundamedik realized it needed to stay at the forefront of medical knowledge and technology.

Bundamedik turned to IBM, its long-term IT solutions partner, to revamp its technology systems based on an advanced IT architecture and data storage system.  IBM Big Data and Analytics technology – including IBM InfoSphere DataStage, and IBM Cognos TM1 and IBM Cognos Business Intelligence – was used to integrate all of the systems in the administration and finance departments in RISA Bunda Jakarta, which was opened in 1972.

The deployment of the integrated data system has cut cost and time spent on administration and budgeting processes as Bundamedik's personnel no longer need to move batches of data around manually. Also, the unified IBM data warehouse allows Bundamedik to automatically collect and retrieve data from discrete and separate sources, shortening the process to complete business reports from days to minutes. The Bundamedik management is thus able to expedite approvals regarding budget planning, while applying the integrated scorecards and strategy management capabilities to monitor business performance.

"Technology leadership is part of Bundamedik's development to support our vision of being Indonesia's leading healthcare specialist with innovation, and a strong IT system has always been the key to our success in building our healthcare service network," said Dr. Ivan Rizal Sini, MD, FRANZCOG, GDRM, SpOG, Chairman of Bundamedik. "We have been continuing to computerize all aspects of our services for the past 30 years. We will keep our commitment to our customers and ensure highly personalized care for every patient with real-time patient and clinical information to improve their overall experience."

For the second phase of the project, IBM will help Bundamedik implement a patient-centered integrated service solution to allow patients to get medical services from all of the healthcare provider's branches through an integrated portal solution.

"Bundamedik is a great example of how an organization is applying advanced IT systems for effective management, and IBM is proud to be Bundamedik's long-term IT partner in its 30-year growth journey," said Nina Wirahadikusuma, Country Software Group Manager, IBM Indonesia. "With IBM's advanced Big Data & Analytics technology, IBM has demonstrated yet again its continued commitment to supporting our clients in Indonesia to address their pressing business challenges."
