Pratt & Whitney touches three continents in a week of customer milestones

2014-10-24 12:30 ET - News Release

EAST HARTFORD, Conn., Oct. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- In what is likely a first in aviation history, Pratt & Whitney this week saw three new engines rolled out on three platforms on three continents. This significant accomplishment comes on the heels of the Pratt & Whitney PurePower® PW1100G-JM engine's successful first flight aboard the Airbus A320neo on Sept. 25. Pratt & Whitney is a division of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

On Oct. 14, Gulfstream launched its new family of G500 and G600 business jets, which will be powered exclusively by Pratt & Whitney Canada's PurePower PW800 engine. A 16,000-pound-thrust-class powerhouse, the PurePower PW800 engine is optimized for high-flying, fast, long-range business jets and shares the same proven, rigorously tested core technology used in Pratt & Whitney's award-winning PurePower family of Geared Turbofan™ commercial engines. The PurePower PW800 engine has the same core as the PW1500G engine powering the Bombardier CSeries aircraft featuring Geared Turbofan engine technology.

On Oct. 18, Mitsubishi Aircraft Corp. rolled out its first Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) in Nagoya, Japan. The MRJ will feature exclusive power from Pratt & Whitney PurePower PW1200G engines.

Pratt & Whitney PurePower engines are setting new industry standards for performance and providing customers world-class operational benefits including dramatic reductions in fuel consumption, noise and emissions compared to today's aircraft.

PurePower engines are also operating in flight tests on the Airbus A320neo and the Bombardier CSeries. The engine family has also been selected for the Irkut MC-21 and Embraer E-Jets E2 family. To date, the PurePower engine family has completed 11,000 hours of testing, including 1,500 hours of flight testing and more than 23,000 cycles of testing.

Pratt & Whitney took part in a third rollout on Oct. 21 when Embraer celebrated the roll out of its KC-390 tanker, an International Aero Engines V2500-E5-powered military transport and aerial refueling aircraft. The V2500 engine was modified for use on the military aircraft, the first application of this kind for the engine, giving it 33,000 pounds of thrust. Pratt & Whitney is the majority collaborator in IAE.

"With three rollouts on three continents in the span of one week, Pratt & Whitney is redefining aviation on a global basis," said Pratt & Whitney President Paul Adams. "These achievements are testament to our technological capabilities and commitment to exceeding our customers' expectations by delivering exceptional value."
