Northwell Health improves patient care and satisfaction with Philips integrated patient monitoring solutions

2018-03-06 10:00 ET - News Release

- Advanced decision-support technology in ICU and ED helps largest New York health system enhance patient flow, capacity management and reduce mortality rate
- Patient satisfaction data from pilot program shows positive impact in the Emergency Department with use of Philips wearable biosensor

AMSTERDAM and LAS VEGAS, March 6, 2018 /PRNewswire/ -- Royal Philips (NYSE: PHG; AEX: PHIA), a global leader in health technology, today announced that Northwell Health, New York State's largest healthcare provider, has improved clinical outcomes and patient satisfaction collaborating with Philips  on a comprehensive IT strategy. Leveraging Philips Virtual Hospital Services portfolio – including eICU technology and a comprehensive Telestroke program – Northwell has seen a reduction in mortality in the ICU and improved access to life-saving stroke care, as well as increased patient satisfaction in the Emergency Department (ED) through a pilot program featuring the Philips IntelliVue Guardian with the wearable biosensor.

eICU program provides a comprehensive view for clinicians

Northwell has aligned the missions of both the IT and clinical departments, directing best practices and enterprise change management to show how health systems can leverage integrated technology to better manage patient populations by bringing people, data and insights together in new ways. Through its collaboration with Philips, Northwell Health has achieved impressive clinical results, and has expanded into new care areas and disease-specific treatments, bringing the health system's vision of a virtual hospital to life.

eICU program provides a comprehensive view for clinicians
Over the past five years, Philips and Northwell have partnered on the eICU program, which enables clinicians from a centralized telehealth center to support bedside care remotely for critically ill patients in the ICU. The initial two years were focused on collecting comparative benchmarked data from the ICUs to determine where remote tele-ICU implementation would be the most impactful. As part of the Philips virtual care enterprise software suite, Philips IntelliSpace eCareManager aggregates structured and unstructured data and integrates patient information from electronic health records (EHRs), providing Northwell with a comprehensive view of ICU units.

Since implementing Philips eCareManager and the eICU program, as well as the TeleStroke program – which connects the telehealth center, stroke care teams, neurologists and ED clinicians to evaluate patients and manage care during the time-sensitive acute stroke phase –Northwell has seen the following results:

  • Reduced ICU mortality by up to 20 percent in units where eICU is implemented;
  • Doubled the number of patients assessed and prescribed the life-saving clot-busting drug, tPA, in the ED; and
  • Doubled organ donation referrals across the Northwell system by leveraging integrated analytics and clinical decision support tools.

"Our ultimate goal is to move from reactive to proactive care," said Dr. Purna Prasad, Vice President & Chief Technology Officer, Northwell Health. "This is much easier said than done, and it's difficult to be proactive when the full patient view isn't easily accessible. Through partnering with Philips, we've been able to use technology to build on the resources we already have, like our top notch staff, and become more efficient – ultimately better serving our patient population and delivering better care."

Patient satisfaction increases with use of wearable biosensor
Following the success of the eICU program, Northwell has recently extended its collaboration with Philips into other areas in the hospital, most recently partnering with Philips on a pilot program using Philips general care solution with the Philips IntelliVue Guardian and wearable biosensor in their Emergency Department. The wearable biosensor automatically and continuously measures heart rate, respiratory rate and posture, and detects falls. This data is then transmitted to the IntelliVue Guardian Software, which analyzes the data and notifies a clinician when there are signs of patient deterioration. Patient satisfaction data from the study shows the positive impact wearable technology has in this area. Key findings include:

  • 95 percent of patients rate the sensor as comfortable to wear on their chest;
  • 73 percent of patients feel better taken care of when wearing the sensor; and
  • 80 percent of patients consider the biosensor to be 'innovative care'1.

"Across the hospital, from the emergency department to the ICU to the general ward, clinicians are attending to patients with a wide variety of monitoring needs," said Carla Kriwet, CEO, Connected Care & Health Informatics, Philips. "We know that continual monitoring is critical to caregivers so they can detect early deterioration, and Northwell's experience shows how innovative solutions enable hospitals to reach the quadruple aims of healthcare: Better clinical outcomes, lower costs and improved patient and caregiver satisfaction."
