Wells Fargo and Habitat for Humanity of Washington, D.C. Partner on Special Volunteer Events to Build Affordable Housing

2016-10-01 10:00 ET - News Release

WASHINGTON, Oct. 1, 2016 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Wells Fargo is partnering with Habitat for Humanity for Washington, D.C. (DC Habitat) on a series of special volunteer days this fall to give back to the community and engage their employees in service. At each of these theme build events, Wells Fargo Team Member Networks (TMN) -- employee affinity groups -- will be helping to build five new houses in Southeast Washington that will be dedicated next year and become homes for local working families.

On Friday, September 30 and Saturday, October 1, the Greater Washington, DC (GWDC) Latin Connection TMN will volunteer to celebrate World Habitat Day. Observed on the first Monday of October and now in its 20th year, World Habitat Day was created by the United Nations as a time to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all people to adequate shelter.

"The GWDC Latin Connection TNM is pleased to partner with DC Habitat and to spend two days building and making a difference in the lives of others in the community," said Adrian Ortega, Wells Fargo GWDC Latin Connection TMN Chapter Chair.  "We are excited that this build is our signature event for this year and helps us celebrate National Hispanic Heritage month. It's important to show our interest in being involved in our community."

Next week, on Wednesday, October 12 and Thursday, October 13, the GWDC Women's TMN will participate in Women Build. This build aligns the mission of the GWDC Women's TMN to support women professionally and personally with Women Build's aim to empower women to take action against poverty housing.

Just as the weather begins to turn, the GWDC Veterans TMN will be braving the cold to volunteer for a Polar Bear Build on Friday, December 9, aimed at highlighting the need for volunteers during the winter months. DC Habitat builds year round in a wide range of weather conditions and volunteering can dip with the temperature.

These build days are just the most recent efforts of a longstanding partnership between Wells Fargo and DC Habitat. This year alone, Wells Fargo employees have already participated in four build days – including June's Rainbow Build – and the company sponsored DC Habitat's 25th Anniversary celebration in 2014 and helped to fund development of 11 recently-completed homes in Ivy City through a Priority Markets Grant.

"Wells Fargo has worked with us for years to help make homeownership possible for low-income families. In addition to their generous financial support, they've never been shy about getting their team out on our sites, getting their hands dirty, and getting work done!," said Susanne V. Slater, President and CEO of DC Habitat. "We can't wait to work with them on these exciting events to continue to strengthen local communities!"
