Distinguished Duke Energy leader, Paul Newton, to retire in August

RALEIGH, N.C., June 30, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Paul Newton, Duke Energy state president - North Carolina, will retire from the company on Aug. 31, 2015.

"Paul is highly respected for his extensive industry knowledge and his commitment to doing what's right for employees and customers," said Lloyd Yates, executive vice president market solutions and president, Carolinas region. "Paul and his team have long championed initiatives to keep costs low and electricity reliable for all North Carolinians.

"Some of their more recent successes include gaining approval for Duke Energy Progress to purchase the North Carolina Eastern Municipal Power Agency's generating assets and the passage of the Mountain Energy Act of 2015, which will help expedite energy modernization efforts in Asheville, N.C. and surrounding communities," Yates added.

Newton began his career with Duke Power in October 1990 as a senior attorney. He has held a number of leadership positions throughout his career, including vice president and general counsel and senior vice president of strategy, rates, wholesale customers, commodities and analytics.

Newton was named state president - North Carolina in 2013, where the company serves approximately 3.2 million customers.
