Think Like a Hacker to Test Your Own Fraud Prevention Platform

2014-09-23 08:15 ET - News Release

PORTLAND, OR -- (Marketwired) -- 09/23/14

iovation, the trusted source for mobile and online fraud prevention to safeguard businesses, teamed up with Bazaarvoice (NASDAQ: BV), the network connecting brands and retailers to the authentic voices of consumers wherever they shop, to pressure test its own fraud system by thinking like a fraudster. Systematically trying different methods to commit fraud against its own network has helped Bazaarvoice continually improve the techniques it employs to intercept and combat the variety of deceptive practices that affect the trustworthiness of online reviews, including practices such as astroturfing, individuals who solicit payment in exchange for writing fake reviews, and agents or employees who solicit fake reviews to promote or demote a business.

As part of iovation's fight against fraudulent online activity, Bazaarvoice Manager of Authenticity and Fraud, JT Buser, and iovation's Senior Enterprise Representative, Don Megale, will present a full overview of Bazaarvoice's recent testing, including methodology and results, to iovaton's community of more than 3,000 global fraud professionals. The presentation will be conducted during the Merchant Risk Council's Platinum meeting, Oct. 6-8 at the Hyatt Regency in Newport Beach, California.

"We have tremendous knowledge about how people are already trying to circumvent our authenticity platform, but we also have to proactively address threats that are still emerging," said Buser. "Pressure testing our system has enabled us to study the evolution of fraud on our network and, as a result, we uncovered datasets that have allowed us to fine-tune our algorithms and customize our device intelligence platform to be highly effective for our specific business needs."

Identifying deceptive behavior in user-generated content and similar social media contexts is a complex undertaking. Each month, more than 500 million people view and share authentic opinions, questions and answers, and experiences about tens of millions of products in the Bazaarvoice network. The integrity of that content is critical -- it is used by consumers to help inform their purchase decisions and, in turn, they will hold brands accountable for anything that diminishes trust. To help ensure that the content displayed is genuine, unbiased, and transparent, Bazaarvoice's multi-faceted anti-fraud strategy includes a robust Authenticity Policy reinforced by state-of-the-art fraud monitoring technologies. Among these is iovation's device-based intelligence, which helps Bazaarvoice to identify the submission source of all reviews and expose hidden relationships while still protecting users' privacy.

"Fraud is ongoing and always changing," said Megale. "Fraudsters are agile and always looking for the next way to commit fraud. Bazaarvoice's pressure testing is an excellent way to get hands-on data and test the flexibility of our fraud prevention platform to stop fake reviewers even more efficiently."
