Initiative Supports ‘Get Online Week’

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- (Business Wire)
Liberty Global, Inc. (“Liberty Global”) (NASDAQ: LBTYA, LBTYB and LBTYK)
has partnered with non-profit organization Telecentre-Europe AISBL
(“Telecentre-Europe”) as one of the main supporters of Get Online Week
2012, a digital inclusion campaign that will engage 200,000 off-liners
to learn e-skills. The company has marked the occasion with the launch
of ‘Internet Buttons’, a free web tool that makes web surfing super easy
for internet beginners and seniors. The web tool allows those confident
using the internet to create an easy-to-use, customized web browser for
friends or family members who are new to the web or find it confusing.
Liberty Global plans to roll out localised versions of ‘Internet
Buttons’ across its European footprint starting with Ireland, Poland and
the Netherlands.
Manuel Kohnstamm, Managing Director of Public Policy & Communications
for Liberty Global said: “We are proud to be one of the key partners of
Get Online Week. The launch of ‘Internet Buttons’ is a testament to our
commitment towards bridging the digital divide by bringing generations
together through the use of technology. We believe this new tool will
help reduce the isolation issue for older people and help them become
active users of the internet.”
Intergenerational Tool
Designed by the not-for-profit company We Are What We Do, ‘Internet
Buttons’ has been created as a resource for seniors, their families and
their communities. It is a web tool that anyone can use to simplify the
internet for someone they know. A personalized page of buttons can be
set up for someone new to or nervous about the net through a dedicated
website, such as the Irish site that launched earlier today www.internetbuttons.ie.
The buttons click through to their favorite websites or services, and
are saved on their own URL that can be accessed from any computer. It
removes all the complicated parts of the internet and there are also
plenty of helper bars, tips and advice on the site to explain everything.
Get Online Week
Get Online Week 2012 is a digital inclusion campaign that runs from
March 26th-30th. The event is organized by Telecentre-Europe
and supported by the European
Commission and a number of international organizations, including
Liberty Global, Microsoft
and European
Broadcasting Union. Telecentre-Europe
is the network of national telecentres that play a prominent role in
bringing digital opportunity to all European citizens and thereby
improve their quality of life, employability and social and civic
participation.
Get Online Week 2012 will help people to get online, find work, learn
new skills, and get more out of life. It will bring together 5,000
telecentres in over 50 countries across Europe,
Eurasia
and Africa
to support at least 200,000 people in their online journeys. This year,
the telecentre networks involved will use new learning
products that will support the themes of intergenerational learning,
youth employability, active aging, civic participation, social
engagement and women in ICT.
