Electronic submissions of eye exam results help citizens skip the
trip to the MVA

ANNAPOLIS, Md. -- (Business Wire)
The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) recently launched the
Online Vision Certification Service to allow authorized vision providers
to submit eye exam results electronically to the MVA. Vision providers
can register to use the service at no charge through the state’s
official website, www.maryland.gov,
search “vision” or the MVA’s website at www.mva.maryland.gov.
Upon registration, the vision provider’s licensing status is verified
with the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene to confirm their
authority to submit vision exam results to MVA.

When vision providers use the Online Vision Certification Service for
their patient’s eye exam results, eligible customers can then renew
their driver's license through the MVA's website or a self-service kiosk
the next business day. In the first month of operation, vision providers
have submitted over 400 exam results to the MVA electronically. There is
no cost to the providers to sign up for the service; all they need is a
computer with internet access. Vision results are valid for 12 months
from the date of exam for driver’s licensing purposes.
“Like other state agencies, the MVA has been challenged to do more with
less,” said John Kuo, MVA Administrator. “Fortunately, MVA has been
successful at implementing alternative service delivery strategies like
the Online Vision Certification service which allows MVA to minimize the
in-branch transactions requiring a customer agent.”
All Maryland drivers’ license holders must meet certain vision
requirements when renewing their driver's licenses. Customers aged 40
and over must have their vision examined with each renewal while those
under the age of 40 are required to have a vision exam every other
renewal period. When it is time to renew, Maryland drivers are notified
if they are qualified to renew their driver's license via the web or
self-service kiosk and are provided information about using Online
Vision Certification Service.
“The Online Vision Certification Service is another in a series of
rapid-firing, helpful and citizen-friendly products developed by our
eGovernment portal team,” said Elliot Schlanger, Secretary and Chief
Information Officer of the Department of Information Technology.
“Maryland drivers, vision providers and state government all reap
benefits from this program.”
A list of over 240 participating vision providers can be found on MVA's
website, www.mva.maryland.gov,
by clicking on Online Vision Certification Service. Customers can also
contact their providers directly. Authorized participating providers are
issued a decal for display in their office after successfully enrolling
in the service.
The Online Vision Certification Service was developed at no charge for
the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration by NIC Inc., through a
self-funded eGovernment services contract with the State Department of
Information Technology (DoIT).
