Solid Core Columns Recipient of R&D Magazine Award for Innovation
Excellence
MILFORD, Mass. -- (Business Wire)
Waters Corporation (NYSE:WAT) today announced that R&D
Magazine selected Waters® CORTECS® UPLC
1.6 micron Columns as a recipient of an R&D
100 Award as one of “the 100 most technologically significant
products introduced into the marketplace over the past year.”

When paired with low-dispersion ACQUITY UPLC® systems, CORTECS
1.6 micron Columns set a new standard in LC column performance when
compared to sub 2-micron fully porous particles columns and other
commercially-available sub 2-micron solid-core columns. The higher
efficiency achieved with CORTECS Columns allows laboratories to produce
greater amounts of information faster with every chromatographic
separation.
“We are excited and proud that the experts at R&D Magazine
recognized our CORTECS 1.6 micron Columns with this award,” said Mike
Yelle, Vice President – Consumables Business Unit, Waters Division. “It
is a testament to the hard work of our team of research scientists and
engineers in creating advanced column technologies that address
scientists' needs for greater resolution, speed and sensitivity.”
CORTECS Column particles feature a solid, impermeable silica core
encased in a porous silica outer layer where the interactions between
the stationary phase and the analytes occur. Waters CORTECS
Applications Notebook describes dozens of applications for CORTECS
columns, which are available in three basic chemistries. The CORTECS C18
Column is a general-purpose, high-efficiency, reversed-phase column
offering balanced retention of acids, bases, and neutrals at low and
mid-range pH. The CORTECS C18+ Column is a general-purpose,
reversed-phase column with a positively charged surface that delivers
excellent peak shape for basic compounds at low ionic strength acidic
mobile phases. And the CORTECS HILIC Column, ideal for LC-MS analyses,
is designed for the retention of extremely polar analytes and offers
orthogonal selectivity versus C18 columns. In an independent
study published in the Journal of Separations Science, researchers at
the University of Geneva determined CORTECS 1.6 micron columns to be the
best performing sub two-micron solid core column, providing the best
balance of permeability and efficiency.1
The product of more than 40 years of bonding and surface technology
know-how and over a decade of knowledge and expertise in sub-2-micron
particle columns, Waters CORTECS 1.6 micron Columns deliver the full
benefit of solid-core particle technology. Researchers have evaluated
and documented that CORTECS UPLC Columns are an ideal balance of
performance and practicality.
In May of this year, Waters expanded the CORTECS family of columns with
the introduction of a new line of 2.7 micron particle columns. Designed
for analytical scientists who need to maximize performance on their
existing LC systems, CORTECS 2.7 micron Columns operate at
HPLC-optimized pressures while delivering high efficiencies, giving
scientists the flexibility to use longer column lengths to improve
resolution and higher flow rates to speed method analysis times. The
CORTECS 2.7 micron columns are also scaleable to CORTECS 1.6 micron
columns enabling scientists to future proof their methods while
optimizing the performance their existing HPLC instruments.
Since the R&D 100 award competition began, Waters has won eight R&D 100
awards, most recently for its Oasis® 96-Well (micro) Elution
Extraction Plate, XTERRA® Columns, ACQUITY® UPLC
System and the ACQUITY UPC2® System.

About the R&D 100 Awards
Now in its 52nd year, the annual R&D 100 award competition
conducted by R&D Magazine honors 100 of the most technologically
significant products introduced during the previous 12 months. To
qualify, winning products or processes must have been available for sale
or licensing during the calendar year preceding the judging. Winners are
chosen by an independent panel of experts.
R&D Magazine will celebrate the achievements of the winners
during an award banquet on November 7 at the Bellagio Casino in Las
Vegas.
