Celebrating 10 Years of a Remarkable Solar Partnership

SAN FRANCISCO -- (Business Wire)

Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco and Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) will celebrate their decade-long solar partnership by hosting the Brown Bag Build on Tuesday, April 28 at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco. Community members are invited to contribute 100 volunteer hours to Habitat for Humanity to safely construct 60 doors and window frames in 30-minute shifts during their lunch breaks for the Habitat Terrace development in San Francisco’s Ocean View neighborhood.

“Providing solar energy helps reduce a family’s overall housing costs and is one of Habitat’s inventive solutions to our area’s expensive real estate challenges. Thanks to our partnership with PG&E and the Solar Habitat program, Habitat homeowners spend less on electricity and that helps us keep the overall cost of homeownership low,” said Phillip Kilbridge, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco. “This is a critical piece of the overall affordability of Habitat homes.”

Habitat Greater San Francisco is a non-profit affordable housing developer whose innovative model offers homeownership opportunities to Bay Area residents. For 10 years, PG&E’s Solar Habitat Program has provided $9.6 million to help respond to the housing needs of families in Northern and Central California. As the exclusive solar partner of Habitat for Humanity in the Bay Area, PG&E’s Solar Habitat Program has funded the installation of solar on every new-construction Habitat for Humanity home for both the Greater San Francisco and the East Bay and Silicon Valley affiliates.

In celebration of this remarkable solar partnership and ongoing effort to bring renewable energy and affordable housing to the Bay Area, Habitat for Humanity Greater San Francisco and PG&E offer this free Brown Bag Build event as a way to engage volunteers who may not be able to volunteer for an entire day, but want to give back in a meaningful way. The event is part of PG&E’s continuing commitment to the community and the utility’s third-annual Month of Service volunteer campaign. PG&E will supply both volunteer builders and volunteer event coordinators to work along-side Habitat staff and volunteers at the event.

In addition to the Solar Habitat program, PG&E employees have provided 7,000 hours of volunteering to Habitat Greater San Francisco through the years.
