AUGUSTA, Maine -- (Business Wire)
Maine’s Bureau of Corporations, Elections, and Commissions (CEC)
continues to offer convenient online services to citizens and businesses
alike. The Total Notary Solution service (http://www.maine.gov/online/notary/total/),
originally launched in 2008, provides Notaries Public commissioned in
the State of Maine with the ability to not only update their information
with the State, but also offers the opportunity to renew their
Commission from the comfort of their home or office.
With a focus on both functionality and accessibility, the service was
updated and enhanced in November 2015. These enhancements include
several “behind-the-scenes” changes that make the service more efficient
for the agency. In an effort to make the public interface more
compatible with modern technology, the service now utilizes the
Maine.gov responsive design template. The template automatically resizes
the pages of the service to fit the user’s device, whether that be a
desktop, laptop, tablet or smartphone.
When renewing their Commission, users must take an online Notary Public
Law and Practices Knowledge Examination. The examination includes 30
questions covering a variety of areas relating to Maine notarial laws
and practices. Once the exam is completed, individuals will be required
to print the documentation relating to their renewal. This documentation
includes the application for renewal (their examination questions,
responses, and residency verification), a notice providing information
about their new commission and their Oath of Office form.
A Notary can renew online up to 90 days past their Commission expiration
date and up to 45 days in advance of their current expiration date. The
filing fee to renew a Commission through the online service is $50.
Prior to this online service, Maine Notaries Public had to complete the
examination process on paper and mail all questions and answers to the
CEC along with a check for payment. CEC would then manually grade the
exam, and mail a confirmation and certificate to the user, or a note
that the user did not pass the test and to retake it. Through the online
service, users are notified immediately if they pass the exam and are
able to make a credit card payment for renewal fees.
“The convenience this service continues to offer cannot be overstated,”
commented Julie Flynn, Deputy Secretary of State. “Being able to
complete the examination online as well as update an individuals name
and contact information eliminates many time consuming manual processes
both for the individual notary and the agency.”
The Total Notary Solution service was developed at no cost to Maine’s
taxpayers. The service is made available by the Bureau of Corporations,
Elections and Commissions, a division of the Secretary of State, in
partnership with InforME, the states eGovernment portal provider. For
more information about the online service contact the Bureau at
207-624-7752 or by email at cec.notaries@maine.gov.
