BASSETERRE, St. Kitts -- (Business Wire)
Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) announced today
that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Ngee Ann
Polytechnic (NP) in Singapore. The goals of the MOU are to develop
mutually beneficial collaborations in education and research, and to
establish a pathway for Singapore students to obtain a veterinary degree.
One area of collaboration is the creation of an international research
internship opportunity for students completing the Diploma in Veterinary
Bioscience from NP’s School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology. The
program will allow a select group of NP students to spend 15 weeks at
the RUSVM campus in St. Kitts, where they will complete a research
project within one of RUSVM’s four research centers.
The internships, to be offered beginning in February 2015, will fulfill
a core requirement of NP students’ training program and will provide
students with practical experience in a veterinary research environment.
Research areas may include topics such as food safety, fish diseases,
sea-turtle conservation and the One Health Initiative that aims to forge
global alliances among medical and veterinary professionals.
“Whether our students choose the veterinary technician career path or
decide to further their education through a Doctor of Veterinary
Medicine degree or postgraduate research degree, the international
research experience they gain at RUSVM will better prepare them for the
world of global veterinary medicine,” said Hedy Goh, PhD, director of
the NP School of Life Sciences & Chemical Technology.
In addition to the internships, the MOU encourages NP and RUSVM faculty
and students to develop future collaborations. “An important component
of RUSVM’s vision for veterinary education and research is the expansion
of global collaborations, including Asia,” said Elaine Watson, DSc, PhD,
FRCVS, RUSVM dean. “The internship program with NP is an exciting
initiative, and serves as the catalyst for future opportunities with
institutions in Singapore and beyond.”
